The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
