Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
