New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm he would live there right away following his victory in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live a part of me and my work," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he hails from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
