Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
