The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
