The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Smog After Diwali
On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the city registered an AQI above 500, which represents ten times the healthy level established by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x higher than safe standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that blankets the capital as winter sets in.
However earlier this year, the newly elected city administration petitioned the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".
Legal Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific periods throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Several recording stations throughout Delhi recorded air quality spiking around late evening to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Effects
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Environmental Problem
Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Around the festival period, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
Various Contamination Contributors
The problem in Delhi is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that becomes contained over the capital as winter air descends.
Medical and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is substantial, according to various research.
This pollution results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early fatalities per year in the capital.
