US Brokers Ukrainian Negotiations in Abu Dhabi as Trump Administration Pushes for Peace Deal

High-level talks involving American, Russian, and Kyiv delegates commenced in Abu Dhabi this week, marking the latest step in efforts to forge a peace agreement to conclude the continuing hostilities in the region.

Key Representatives and Opening Discussions

US Army official the US representative allegedly held talks with a Moscow team on the eve of the talks, with negotiations continuing into Tuesday.

“The talks are going well and we remain optimistic. The Secretary remains in close coordination with the administration throughout these proceedings,” an official representative commented.

Ukraine’s top intelligence official, the head of military intelligence, was also expected to participate in the meetings, though it remained unclear whether face-to-face engagement with Moscow’s delegates would happen or if distinct bilateral meetings would be conducted.

The composition of the Moscow team was uncertain. “We cannot provide details. We are following the media reports,” a Russian representative informed state media.

Context and Revised Peace Plan

These talks come after prior discussions in a European nation where US and Ukrainian representatives reworked a preliminary US proposal for ending the conflict.

Moscow has not yet accepted the latest version of the plan and is not expected to accept many of the Ukrainian amendments.

Russia’s top diplomat, the Russian diplomat, emphasized that any revised peace plan must adhere to the “spirit and letter” of what was covered during previous high-level meetings between the two countries.

Global Responses and Apprehensions

EU leaders are apparently struggling to stay engaged in the negotiations as American representatives drive the efforts.

The Finnish leader, a European figure, who has emerged as a key mediator between Washington and European officials, commented that the next few days would be decisive in attempts to find a resolution.

He allegedly held discussions with Kyiv’s leader and the alliance officials, stating that “The future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and with European security falling under Europe’s purview.”

At the same time, the France’s leader, the French official, warned against a settlement that would amount to a “capitulation” for the nation.

“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. Does that mean that it is what must be accepted by the Ukrainians and the Europeans? The answer is no,” he stated.

Specifics of the Initial US Plan

The US proposal was originally made up of multiple articles and was based on dialog between US and Russian representatives, with input from Kyiv defense officials.

Key aspects of the proposal reportedly involved:

  • Ukraine surrendering territory presently occupied by Moscow
  • Additional zones that would be required to be voluntarily given up
  • Limits on the size of the military forces
  • Immunity for all sides in the war regarding war crimes

Recent Events and Ongoing Difficulties

The US official reportedly traveled to Kyiv to inform the Ukrainian president on the proposal and urge rapid acceptance.

This pressure, combined with the leaking of the plan, reportedly took by surprise Kyiv and EU authorities.

The Ukrainian president stated that the country was facing one of the toughest periods in its existence and was being compelled to decide between “forfeiting self-respect or abandoning a crucial supporter.”

Subsequently, Driscoll informed alliance ambassadors on the proposal in Kyiv, with one attendee labeling it as “an extremely difficult session” and stating that European officials were stunned by both the content and manner of the presentation.

The US administration later moderated its stance, stating that the 28-point proposal was an “opening point for discussion” rather than a final demand.

Military Situation Amid Negotiations

While peace talks continue, Russian forces has maintained its nightly strikes on Ukrainian urban centers.

Russian forces allegedly fired numerous of missiles and hundreds of unmanned aircraft at targets in and around Kyiv, according to Kyiv reports.

The Ukrainian president stressed that Moscow must not feel it could win the conflict while negotiations were underway.

“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Measures against Russia need to produce tangible effects,” he stated.

The capital’s leader confirmed that multiple people had been fatally injured in the recent attack on the city.
