During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
